Treatment may include the administration of therapeutic medication, such as aspirin, nitroglycerin or drugs that affect the cardiac rhythm. In addition, cardiac rehabilitation programs may be utilized to help patients recover from a heart attack.
For a wide range of patients, such as cardiac patients, it is possible to continuously monitor a number of medical parameters indicative of the condition of the patient, such as heart rhythm, ECG waveforms, blood pressure, and respiratory gas content. Continuous monitoring of physiological parameters allows for early intervention if necessary and the timely treatment of changes that could be indicative of impending problems or even death.
The ability to continuously monitor a patient and provide early warning of changes in patient status are particularly critical in the treatment of cardiac patients. Accordingly, a number of techniques for monitoring the health of cardiac patients have been proposed. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 5,955,767 to Bozkurt et al. describes a method of monitoring a patient by detecting an electrocardiogram signal, monitoring one or more of the patient's physiological parameters, such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory gas content, temperature, and ventricular activity, and generating a composite signal indicative of the monitored physiological parameter or parameters. In this method, the electrocardiogram signal is filtered by signal conditioning circuitry, and the filtered electrocardiogram signal is decomposed by a discrete Fourier transform (DFT). Changes in the heart rate are represented by the change in the spectrum of the filtered electrocardiogram signal and changes in ac619d1d87
